I know it's my fault but it pissed me off immensely when I found it later and realized that her attendant doesn't tell you about it. For every other successor I could use their Io clone to determine whether I had gotten all the vestiges but Eva's doesn't actually list Part A. This last one maybe is just a reflection of me, but I was PISSED to learn it was possible to save Eva. There's no reason to backtrack to old areas so it wasn't until I was literally about to fight the last boss and I was missing Davis' vestiges that you could go back to old areas and find new NPCs and shit. I really like the NPC quests but I wish the game let me know about them.

I could have done without some of the cutscenes where it was just Louis explaining the plot to me. Speaking of cutscenes, dark souls' unique storytelling style meant that you had to work for it. I really do wanna know the lore and it's a cool storytelling device but there's just too much of it. The vestiges were cool but there are so many and inevitably you get a bunch in a row and it's exhausting to go through 10 of those interactive cutscenes in a row. I could do without Yakumo quipping every 5 seconds. Some of the dialogue is pretty cheesy and some of the character designs are way too ridiculously anime to take seriously (like how every female character either looks like a preteen or is a tittymonster with 80 lbs of mommy milkers ready to go). and then they reused the towers for Mido's area so it was like shitty cathedral 2.0, now with more climbing. I don't mind that an area be confusing but its the confusing layout mixed with the awful samey aesthetic that really fucks with the pacing. It's a maze where every path looks exactly the same and everything is a brain numbing white. I avoided backstabs just to avoid that animation. The backstabbing animation takes SO long and is so dramatic.

Meanwhile I had like 7 hammers that all looked basically the same in code vein. Like in Bloodborne there are less different weapons but each one is so distinctive in terms of style, aesthetic, and capability, that it felt like a lot. I picked up the GMX veil, Tyrant Axe, and the big meme FF buster sword, and that carried me through the whole game personally but there aren't really a lot of weapons - it is cool that you can get all the boss and party member weapons but they are mostly kind of shit IMO and a lot of weapons look very similar. There isn't much weapon or outfit variety. By the late game I was so OP I obliterated the Oreinstein and Smough boss and Mido back to back without even having to replenish heals. Only one boss gave me any trouble - the butterfly lady in the city ruins because by then I hadn't upgraded my status effect spells to be able to use them with any build so I had to use a build I wasn't familiar with. Over half the bosses I beat on the first try, including one who I beat with no heals at all.

With the right spells and weapons you are basically immortal. He outdamaged me well into the late game, and if I ever died he res'd me immediately. I ran with Yakumo and Io as my main partners throughout and Yakumo especially was a beast and killed most enemies before I could. Most enemies in the latter half are color pallate swaps of ones we fought already. The game doesn't have a lot of enemy variety. No game is perfect though so here's some criticisms: Most of the areas were pretty fun, with some exception, and the game's lore was intriguing and mostly made me want to pursue it and learn more. The NPC helper was a great way to shake up the soulsborne formula. The bosses were the highlight for me, the boss fights were all fun and exciting, and rewarded creative solutions.

The combat system is pretty straightforward and easy to understand, so you're free to develop a lot of freedom in how you play, plus the vestige powers make for a good reward for actually exploring areas to their fullest. My favorite thing has to be the build variety - so many different powers and options and combinations, and a very unintrustive system for outfits. I liked the character customization and most of the exploration. I really liked it, it's not top 10 worthy but out of all the souls-like games it really stands out. So I discovered Code Vein from watching old Iron Pineapple videos, all I knew was that it was anime dark souls.
